In the future, there may be further contrasts between route and network planning in different areas of the world. Airlines in Europe are increasingly competing with rail for passengers. The development of a comprehensive high-speed rail network provides more choices for travellers. The high-speed rail network within France has replaced a large proportion of domestic flights. KLM and Lufthansa have both recently promoted the use of rail over air for short-haul flights. The frequency, speed, cost and efficiency of high-speed rail has reduced the market share of domestic travel in France. In the USA, the rail network is less developed than in Europe. With the exception of localized areas, rail cannot compete with air travel.
